The torque wrench is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to tighten bolts accurately and safely. It allows users to measure the exact amount of torque applied, ensuring that their work will be done correctly and securely. With its simple design and easy-to-use mechanics, it’s no wonder the torque wrench is such a popular choice among home handymen and professional technicians alike. Whether you need to fix something in your garage or make sure a critical component on a machine is secure, investing in a torque wrench is always worth considering.

Different types of torque wrenches

Different types of torque wrenches are used to apply a specific amount of torque to a bolt or other fastener. The most common type is the beam torque wrench, which uses a beam with markings that indicate the amount of torque being applied. Other types of torque wrenches include the dial indicator torque wrench, which has a dial that indicates the amount of torque being applied, and the digital torque wrench, which uses a digital readout to display the amount of torque being applied.

How to properly use a torque wrench

The torque wrench is a vital tool when it comes to ensuring that bolts and nuts are properly tightened. It allows you to apply the correct amount of torque, or twisting force, to the fastener so that it doesn't become loose over time.

There are two main types of torque wrenches: beam and dial. Beam wrenches are the more traditional style and work by bending as you turn the handle. This change in shape is used to measure the amount of torque applied to the bolt. Dial wrenches, on the other hand, have a digital readout that displays how much torque has been applied.

To use either type of torque wrench, first select the desired level of torque using the knob or lever. Then, place the wrench on the bolt head and tighten until you hear or feel a click. This click indicates that the pre-set amount of torque has been reached and prevents you from applying too much force which could damage the bolt. Finally, remove the wrench and check that the bolt is tight by trying to twist it with your hands.

When not to use a torque wrench

There are a few situations where it is not appropriate to use a torque wrench. Firstly, if the fastener is already tight, then there is no need to use a torque wrench as doing so could damage the fastener or the surface it is screwed into. Secondly, if you are working in an area where there is a risk of the wrench slipping, such as on a ladder, then it is best to avoid using a torque wrench. Finally, if you are working with very small fasteners, such as those used in electronics, then it is best to use a different tool as a torque wrench can be too powerful and damage the small fastener.
